The Key Master

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

“You are now the key master”

I said as I handed over the keys to a project I have been working on for the past year and a half.

“Wait, is that from a movie. Wait which one?” He said fumbling in his thoughts.

“Say Anything” I replied

“Oh, I don’t know that one. “

“It’s an ‘80’s classic, now you have a new homework assignment. Go and watch it!” He gladly laughed at the assignment and went on his way. Not sure if he will ever watch it but it made me think. “I could get into some ‘80’s jams right now.”

So I went home to search for the beloved old school movie of Say Anything.

I could not wait for some serious memories of the crush I had on John Cusack as the adorable Lloyd Dobler. I could not wait for the memories I forgot. But I gained so much more.

This was Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut and wrote this movie as

“A love story for people who don’t say I love you.”

It was based off of a relationship he was in at the time.

“It’s a very personal movie, and it reminds me of falling in love, falling out of love, and falling back in love with life and all the unexpected glories and pain that happened along the way.”

Lloyd inspired the people around him and created positivity even when it didn’t exists.

He put joy and happiness in front of college and a job and stuck up for what he wanted. He wanted to make Diane Court happy.

“What I really want to do with my life, what I want to do for a living, is I want to be with your daughter. I'm good at it.” Oh Lloyd Dobler….. I melt..

Why doesn’t the world have more of Lloyd Dobler? It was a great reminder of how important love is in our life. He had love in his heart and he BELIEVED in IT! Why is that so hard for so many of us to have that? There can always be goodness in everything you do even when things seem grim and impossible. Lloyd pushed the limits on everyone around him to bring a positive vibe when they couldn’t.

“Why can’t you be in a good mood? How hard is it to decide to be in a good mood once in a while?”

Lloyd Dobler never gave up! When Diane broke up with him it seemed impossible to get her back. But he did it. He knew the power of saying “I love you” and hearing it.

“- Diane Court: I love you.

- Lloyd Dobler: What?

- Diane Court: I love you. How many more times do I have to say it?

- Lloyd Dobler: One more would be nice.

- Diane Court: I love you... please. I love you.”

My goodness, how my heart melted when he bravely held his boom box over his head and played Peter Gabriel’s In Your Eyes.

He took a chance.

He let his heart drive him.

He made it happen.

He taught me the reminders I needed:

Putting joy and happiness in front of everything else.

The power of “I love you” even when you are afraid to say it out loud.

"Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. " 1 John 4:11

No matter how impossible and crazy it seemed he did it and all the people around him saw him fight the odds.

Against all odds, when it looked hopeless, Abraham believed the promise and expected God to fulfill it. He took God at his word, and as a result he became the father of many nations. God’s declaration over him came to pass:

“Your descendants will be so many that they will be impossible to count!” Romans 4:18

Believe in that dream that seems impossible. Believe in yourself to make it happen and believe that God only wants good for you. Believe that there is love all around you and don’t be afraid to tell someone you love them today!

So now you have a homework assignment. Pick something that you always wanted to do and DO IT! Believe in yourself, believe in good things and believe that GOD IS ALWAYS BEHIND YOU! Be the key master of your dreams!

Oh and by the way:

“I love you!”

Hope that you have a wonderful and inspirational day and go watch some ’80’s classes to make you smile!
